Welcome to Escuelas Hermanas
Bienvenidos a la Página de Escuelas Hermanas
Escuelas Hermanas is a Sister School Program
between the student in the International Baccalaureate Program in Manatee
County, Florida and their Sister Schools in the region of Alta Verapaz,
Guatemala. There currently are 3 levels of education participating in the
Sister School Program. In Manatee County, Florida, participating schools
are Wakeland Elementary, Louise R. Johnson Middle and Southeast High
School. In San Juan Chamelco, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, participating
schools are Chiquic Elementary and NUFED Middle. We hope to add a high
school in the nearby city of Coban in the upcoming school year. More
information to come on the High School program.
Students that attend Chiquic Elementary School and NUFED Middle School are
direct descendants of the indigenous Mayan people of Alta Verapaz called the
K´ekchis which have preserved their language and customs to a remarkable
degree, therefore the education is bilingual and the Spanish language is the
principal used for teaching.
